About Northern Signs Research

Helping Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

We are professionals who work with deaf and hard of hearing children ranging from infants to university students. We came together to share our ideas about developing language and literacy abilities with deaf children. Our belief is that all languages, including signed languages, contribute to later learning and literacy. We quickly realized that there were very few valid and reliable assessments of signed languages available to educators. As a result, many programs using signed languages, like ASL, are not effectively building on these abilities because they are unable to determine deaf children’s strengths and needs regarding ASL development. So, we founded Northern Signs Research Inc. as a way to explore, create and distribute ASL assessment and teaching resources.
